The region will receive part of a $1 million spendto upgrade rail lines at Shellharbour and Unanderra as part of the Fixing Country Rail pilot program.

The $15 million program is designed to alleviate connectivity problems on the network.

Much of the $15 million is being spent in rural areas like Moree and Barellan.

But two projects in the Illawarra will share in $1 million, which will build anew turnout at the centre of Dunmore Loop at Shellharbour and another at Unanderra.

The Illawarra turnouts –which allow trains to transfer from one line to another –are designed to increaseline capacity.

“We got two of the 10projects announced state-wide for this program,” said Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra Gareth ward.

“It’s a great win for business. Itmeans more flexible use of the freight network and the existing infrastructure.

“We can have more freighttrains accessing the raillines and that means more freightoff our roads and onto rail.”

The key freight rail infrastructure project in the Illawarra is the Maldon-Dombarton line.

Priced at around $700 million is it vastly more expensive than the two turnouts.

Mr Ward said this project was about making the best of the network now.

“This isn’t about Maldon-Dombarton, this is about improvingthe existingnetwork and the infrastructurethat is there and utilisingit to itsfullest extent,” Mr Ward said.

“I’ve already made it clear the governmentis committed to Maldon-Dombarton buteven the Labor partyagrees that a private sector solution is what’s required.”

Mr Ward said the appeal of the funding was the chance to movefreight off the road and onto the rail network.

“One ofthe reasons I asked for the money is that I could see the benefits of enhancingand increasing the amount of freightthat moves around the line,” he said.

“This helps movefreight quicker and more efficientlywhich means businessis moreinclined to use freightrail rather than freight by road.”
