At 18 years old, Tuncurry’s Gerald Germon was more preoccupied with catching wavesthan picking up a copy of the Daily Telegraph, even after he made the front page.

Gerald’s front page debut occurred on January 14, 1963.

He was involved in therescue of 14 people who had been swept away by a rip on a Forster beach.

The article reported, “Lifesavers yesterday rescued 14 people who had been swept more than a quarter of a mile to sea at Forster”.

Together withbeach inspector David McManusand a visiting Redhead Surf Club memberRobert Dixon, Gerald helped save all 14 lives that day.

The article which featured on the front page.

It was reported Gerald, “brought several of the bathers back on his surf board”.

Gerald said he recalls carrying four people on his board.

“It was exhausting paddling them all,” he said.

“But it was all I could to do to not have them drown against therip.”

Gerald said he believed it wasone of the biggest rescues that had ever taken place in the Great Lakes area.

Despite theheroic efforts from the three men, therewas no awards or recognition for the lifesavers.

Those who weresaved quickly ran up the beach andothers were transported to Cape Hawke Hospital suffering from shock and asphyxia.

Gerald’s blast from the past came when the news clipping was found byfamily members cleaning his mother’s house.

They found twosignificant news clippings. One on his sister’s graduation from nursing in Sutherland and second on Gerald’srescue.

“I didn’t even know it was in there –this was the first time I had seen it.”

Now in his 70s, Gerald looks back withfondness to his lifesaving and surfing days.

“I would paddle from Tuncurry over to Forster for a surf, then back again!”

“I couldn’t imagine doing that now.”
