The construction of the long-awaited indoor training centre for the Port Fairy Cricket Club is well underway.

The new facility will cost $210,000 with funding drawn from the club, the Port Fairy Folk Festival and the Moyne Shire Council.

The outer shell of the building is now complete –a rapiddevelopment given the task was only started last Monday.Work will now begin on the internal fit-out of the centre with the concretebase to be laid on August 18.

Carpet and nets will then be put in with the centre expected to be ready for use by September 10.

Port Fairy Cricket Club committee member Paul Sheehan said the centre would be a huge asset for the club.

Mr Sheehan said it was another step in taking the club forward into the future.

“We had three senior and five junior teams last year, so to have the extra training capacity will be terrific,” Mr Sheehan said.

“The project also includes a third net outside and an upgrade of the two existing ones.It will be a great facility for the club and for the town.”

Mr Sheehan said the club had hosted Premier Cricket games for the past three years and Footscray-Edgewater had applied to returnin 2016-17.

He said the Southcombe Park package was an attractive one for visiting camps.

“It’s perfect for teams wanting to come down here for a training camp,” Sheehan said.

“As well as the great cricket facilities, there is Southcombe Lodge, the heated indoor pool and the basketball stadium – so it is ideal.”

The journey to get the centre built has been a long one, beginning more than two years ago.

Originally, the new centre location was plannedbehind the basketball stadium.

But this was changed with the site for the centre now along the fenceline of the Southcombe Caravan Park.

It is the first major building project for the club since it added a second storey to its clubrooms back in 2010.
