Jonathan Doig, who has lived in Gymea Bay for 15 years, campaigned for the Sutherland to Cronulla cycleway and raised a petition of over 3,000 signatures.

He is on the board of the Sutherland Shire Environment Centre and is convener of the Sutherland Climate Action Network.

Mr Doig is a software engineer, publishing environmental data online for the University of NSW to inform better and more sustainable planning.

“I love the shire for its unspoiltbushland, beaches and rivers,” Mr Doig said.

“If elected, I’ll work to protect what we all love about the shire and restore local democracy to planning decisions.

“I’ll also push for more renewable energy and solar as well as cycleways.

“They’re good for our health, local businesses and the planet.”

Mr Doig said the presentLiberal dominated council hadswung the pendulum too far in favour of developers.

“People aren’t being properly consulted, and are discovering too late that they’ll be boxed in, lose views and face increased traffic,” he said.

“I want to scale back development to an appropriate level and make sure neighbours can clearly see what’s planned and developers can’t change their plans after approval.”

A Ward candidate NathanHunt said he was running on his history of representing a genuine voice for residents in the shire.

“The Greens will be running a strong campaign against inappropriate overdevelopment, and for the implementation of the Sutherland to Cronulla cycleway,” he said.

Mr Hunt was born and raised in the Shire, attended Port Hacking High School and works locally.

“I am extremely concerned at the level of development currently taking place in the shire and the inability or unwillingness of successive councils to place appropriate restrictions or checks in place,” he said.

‘”The Greens always put the community first and I promise to ensure that Council decisions are transparent and that council is accountable to the community.”
