The sense of urgency that the Tigers played with from the opening whistle seemed to catch the Cowboys by surprise and even the return of skipper Johnathan Thurston after a one match absencewasn’t enough to get great northern engine humming.

Kevin Naiqama drew first blood for the home side when he dived on aMitchell Moses grubber on the sixth minute, and a Tigers penalty kick made it 6-0 after 19 minutes.

The Cowboys showed some signs of life a few minutes later when Kane Linnett scored off a precise Thurston grubber to tie things up.

The Tigers struck back in the 31stminute whenDavidNofoaluma cut a swath through four Cowboys defenders, anda late first half penalty kick made the score 12-6 after 40 minutes.

Both teams nailed penalty kicks in the second half to make it 14-8, then atry to Sauaso Sue in the 73rd minutegave the home side a late eight point buffer.

But even on a night in which they completed just 58 per cent of their sets, missed 40 tackles and conceded 15 penalties the Cowboys were still in with a shot of stealing the win whenEthan Lowe scored to make it 20-14 with three minutes to go.

It was James Tedesco who iced the win for the Tigers with one of the best tries of the year which saw him navigate just about every Cowboy on the field on his way past the line.

The Cowboys willbe on the road again in Round 23 for a must-win match-up against the Roosters;here’s hoping this Sunday will be remembered as a temporary blip on the way to greater things.
