Great Lakes Strikers Women’s Hockey Team managed to defeat a determinedWingham side on Saturday by fourgoals to nil.

The score really does not indicate how competitive the game was as a verycommitted Wingham defence proved very difficult to score against, in particulartheir goal keeper who managed to stop some great shots on goal.

Strikers were always in control of the game but were continually frustrated at notbeing able to net a shot or take valuable advantage of scoring opportunities inparticular their numerous penalty corners that went unconverted.

Strike forwards Linda Thacker, Jane McNeill, Sami Annetts, Ashley Thompson and Kelly O’Byrne all made valuable runs with the final pass or shot just notfinding the mark.

Finally a great cross from Michelle Linhart resulted in finding Linda in perfectposition to slot home the first goal.

After half time Strikers then resorted to their more constructive style of play byutilising the ball and their 1–2 passing to counteract the Wingham defence.

Sarah Linhart, Anita Lauder, Tracy Thompson and centre half Michelle Merrickplayed pivotal roles in maintaining possession by providing good passes andback-up to the forwards.

Anita was able to capitalise on a loose clearance by the defence to add number two.

With this lead Strikers kept up the pressure and created more space by usingtheir passes effectively which resulted in Sarah scoring number threeand MichelleM adding fourfrom a direct shot from a penalty corner.

The defence was fortunate in not having too much pressure with both Sally Huntand Anna Black having their usual solid games.

Team points went to daughter and mother combination,Sarah three, Michelle L, twoand Linda one.

This week Strikers are up against Chatham at 6:30 on Friday Night on the TLFwith umpiring and duty at 8pm
